FAQ
WE GET IT – THERE ARE A LOT OF UNKNOWNS WHEN JOINING A GROUP OR STARTING A NEW ACTIVITY
We’ve compiled a list of questions we hope will answer some of yours. Of course, feel free to contact us if you have more.
We rehearse every Tuesday evening with time slots between 6 PM and 10 PM at Anola Community Club. Depending on the dancer’s group, they may be asked to attend additional rehearsals on Sundays (1 – 2 times a month) in preparation for upcoming performances.
A dancer must turn 5 years old by December 31 of the year they join.
We use a very complicated formula – just kidding! Dancers range in age from 5 to young adults. We place them in a group taking into consideration their ability, previous Ukrainian dance experience, and age. Our experienced instructors use their discretion to place dancers at an appropriate level, ensuring each dancer is taught the fundamentals of Ukrainian dance and continues to be challenged as their level increases.
No. We have very talented Costume Coordinators that arrange costuming for the dancers. But if you’re able to sew, let us know! We’re always looking for more helping hands in this department.
Proper dance attire is very important to ensure the dancer’s and instructor’s success during rehearsal. It allows the dancer to move freely and the instructors to see the dancer’s body positions. “Dressing the part” adds to feeling like a dancer, assists in letting the dancer focus their energy into their movements, and overall contributes to a better focused rehearsal.
The simple answer – no. We prefer for you to wait in the foyer where tables and chairs are available and you’re able to meet other Selo families. Your dancer is better focused when all attention can be paid on the instructor and the steps they’re working on.
Throughout the year we have Dance Display classes that are for this exact purpose – you get to come into the rehearsal space and watch how your dancer is progressing.
It really depends on the year – every year is different. All dancers participate in our year-end show and some travel to competitions. We try to provide an opportunity for all of our dancers to perform at a local performance or event, as well.
Generally, as dancers get older they have more opportunities to perform and travel.
You’ll have to visit us to find out!
